We had the chance to ask them a few questions to learn more about what drives their passion for education. Read on to hear their inspiring stories and insights!
Sarah Kennedy:
1. Tell us about your career in education!
I am celebrating my 20th year of being a middle school teacher! I taught 6th-grade Language Arts for the first 5 years, and for the past 15 years I, have taught 7th-grade Language Arts. I have taught in Houston County, Forsyth County, and Georgia Cyber Academy, but for most of my career, I have been at Jefferson Middle School, where I currently work.
2. What inspired you to become an educator?
My mom was my inspiration to go into education. She definitely lit that spark for me and told me that I needed to be a teacher. In fact, when I started my career back in 2003, she and I got to teach in the same hall. It was a fun time!
3. Can you share a memorable moment or story from your teaching career that highlights the impact you’ve had on your students or community?
It’s hard to pick one memorable moment, but I will say that what impacts me the most is when students come back. I love to see them down the road, and celebrate who they have become and what they have accomplished after leaving 7th grade. I also love to hear their stories and memories.
4. What advice would you give to new teachers just starting their careers?
I would encourage young teachers to not give up, focus on the positives, and don’t leave the classroom if you love the students.
5. What message would you like to convey to the community members who nominated and supported you for this award?
Thank you to my friends and community members for nominating me. I was so happy and blessed to receive this award!
